Best of 2019-20: Students, groups earn leadership, Wood, co-op, Global Ambassadors awards

More than 100 recognized during year-end program

More than 100 students and student groups were recognized at University of Wisconsin-Stout’s annual Leadership Awards programs released virtually May 6.

Brandon BeaulieuWinners were announced for the Samuel E. Wood Medallion and campus Leadership Awards for the 2019-20 academic year. Also, the Outstanding Co-op Student of the Year Award winners were named for 2019. The Office of International Education awarded two Global Ambassadors.

Those nominated for awards also were recognized.

The event was sponsored by the Involvement Center, Stout Student Association, Career Services and the Office of International Education. The ceremony was held virtually and can be viewed here.

Wood Medallion

A total of 25 students received the Wood Medallion, given annually to seniors who have been active in student activities and exhibited an outstanding degree of leadership while at UW-Stout. Winners are chosen by a committee representing students, faculty and staff.

The medallion is the highest nonacademic award for students.

Samuel E. Wood was a longtime assistant chancellor for Student Services/Dean of Students. He retired in 1991 and died in February 2013.

Leadership Awards

Nathalie BonillaWinners of the annual Leadership Awards are chosen by a committee made up of students and staff. The winners are:

  • Outstanding Student Leader of the Year, Brandon Beaulieu, member of Qube staff, Stout Student Association director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; and Nathalie Bonilla, president of Latinos Unidos
  • Student Organization of the Year, Native American Student Organization
  • Student Organization Event of the Year, Four winners: Diversity Week, Black Student Union, Latinos Unidos and Stout Student Association; American Red Cross Blood Drive, Gamma Sigma Sigma; International Night, International Club; Relay for Life, Colleges Against Cancer
  • Adviser of the Year, Karissa Zastrow, Blue Devil Productions
  • Student Employee of the Year Undergraduate, Kelsea Goettl, Menomonie, sustainability specialist
  • Student Employee of the Year Lead, Xena VanDusartz, human resources assistant
  • Student Employee of the Year Graduate, Coltan Schoenike, Omro, graduate assistant at the Qube.

Global Ambassadors

  • Madelaine Nordstrom, New Berlin, Experience Scotland, spring 2018
  • Pakou Vang, Andover, Minn., Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies, spring 2018

Outstanding Co-op Student of the Year Award

The Outstanding Co-op Student of the Year Award was given to 23 students in the university’s Cooperative Education Program.

More than 1,000 students participated in co-ops in the past year. Through Career Services, students work in a paid position in their fields of study and receive academic credit.

The winners are selected by the program’s Advisory Committee for excellence and achievements in their cooperative positions, for contributions to their employers and for academic achievement.
