UW-Stout's Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology (ET) provides you with a unique career advantage with four engineering concentrations:

These concentrations share common technical courses that allow you to switch or add a second concentration. The program's applied laboratory and theoretical education develop engineering technologists who are:

  • In-demand by employers in their respective engineering technology discipline
  • Recognized for their ability to apply technology expertise in their discipline
  • Recognized for their leadership and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrating continued career growth and professional development
UW-Stout's B.S. Engineering Technology degree offers you the choice to specialize in one of four engineering areas: electrical, mechanical design, plastics and production operation / UW-Stout

Established in the 1950s, the Engineering Technology program collaborates with an industry advisory board to stay up-to-date on design, production, automation, manufacturing and application-related trends. Our faculty has industrial experience in their specialized fields of mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, electrical engineering, project management and production operations.

A broad technical core stresses applied laboratory experiences. Your theoretical education is based on the practical experiences of your professors, all of whom have industrial experience in their specialized fields. The strong professional studies area provides you with the foundations you need for a future management career track.

Preparing for Engineering Technology

As a student in the Engineering Technology program, you must have an aptitude for science and mathematics. We encourage you to take upper-level math courses in high school, including algebra and calculus.

Your future career will also include collaboration, economic considerations, creative problem solving and your ability to feel comfortable wearing many hats. So, bring along curiosity, a critical mind and a willingness to work hard.

Starting Out in Engineering Technology

The first year of your program will include program and general education courses – depending on the concentration you have chosen. You will take engineering fundamentals in addition to English composition, calculus and physics courses.

As You Progress

As you progress in your program you will learn and apply manufacturing techniques as well as design and planning strategies. Industry trends show an increasing demand for graduates who are technically competent and can perform well in corporate and team environments. Interpersonal competencies and communication skills are integrated within the technical content.

A co-op or field experience is required. Students can complete this requirement during the summer after the sophomore or junior year. An impressive number of employers is visiting campus every semester during the UW Stout Career Conference – this gives students the opportunity to interview for positions. Several student organizations provide you with additional professional and technical experiences as well as the chance to develop your leadership skills and professional network.
